St. George & The Dragon

Copy of Raphael
Oils- 24" x 36"on Masonite. Summer-Winter, 2006/07

I did a copy of Raphael's original for several reasons-besides that it was a Raphael. I felt it represented a fusion of Ancient Dutch/Flemish oil painting techniques with Italian Renaisance aesthetics. Raphael based his composition on the Flemish oil miniatures which were in high demand in Italy during this period. In another sense it illustrates all standard aspects of modern science fiction/fantasy epic illustration. The hero, the monster, the damsel in distress and the trusty horse/sidekick. The original is roughly 8" x 11"- instead I blew it up to 2'x3'-in order to catch Raphael's details- which was kind of humbling for me.
